Inspiration Project
Commisioned by Dutch luxury warehouse Bijenkorf.
‘Create a  head-to-toe look inspired by the theme typography’

“In typography different factors play a role in making a text readable and transparent. Even more important than typeset is composition and spacing. In particular inter-spacing, which refers to empty spaces in between the words and lines that create structure without noticed visibly.”

In my creation I play with the concept of interspacing, by overlapping layers with both transparent and opaque parts. The combination of different levels, colours, and prints creates an optical graphic effect. The striped print suggests a circle that actually disappears towards the side. To me a circle is the most perfect shape, which I create within the illusion and expectation of the mind and empty spacing.

The pvc sculpture is organically shaped following the female body lines and flows into a hard, geometrical shape above the bust. The juxtaposition of these aspects underlines the stylistic and emotional diversity of typography.

At the AMFI Fashion Transit graduation event 2010 I showed my graduation collection in a catwalk show. Also I won the “Alice in Wonderland” Award for the most visionary student.

Concept / Inspiration

Coming from the point in history where Dada evolved into Surrealism and where revolt met escape. In the 1920’s Dada represented an anti-scream that mocked all bourgeoisie ideals and art by methods of automatism and ready-mades. Surrealism came from the same dissatisfaction but took the way of handling this a step further. By escaping into a dream world and materialising the fantastic, they created a new, more satisfying reality.

I combine Dada and Surrealism in order to deal with the input I get from the outside world. There is the presence of a certain revolt and loudness that I like to mix with a fantastic new reality in my dream world.

Both these characters come together in my inner fool, he is there to embody my problems and laugh at them at the same time. Which can sometimes be rather melancholic.  I take myself serious, but not too much. This fool represents the joyful aspect of that part of us that we repress. He is our inexhaustible energy, as long as we agree to laugh at our serious selves, going always beyond ourselves.

This collection presents the fool inside of me.

This results in a collection consisting of polyester body shapes, pierrot collars and big dotted prints. The colour palette shows mysterious greys combined with deep orange and golden yellow. One might question reality while looking at this collection, the new body shapes and transparent fabrics create an illusion where the true body is hard to identify.
